Chloe Elizabeth Lewis:  Week 8
(November 4 - 10, 2001)

Day 50, Chloe gained some weight today (1286 grams or 2 lbs. 13.4 oz.)  and was very alert.

We found out how to get Chloe's attention.  Chloe's grandmother gave her a toy that makes musical baby sounds.  It is so radically different from the sounds that are in the NICU that Chloe will instantly wake up and look all over for the sound.

What a great thing to discovered, our daughter likes music or her parents just want to see more than what is happening.  At any rate, we now know that Chloe can hear.

Day 51, Chloe now weighs 2 lbs 14.8 oz.  which is great.  She is alert and doing extremely well.  One thing I did notice is how well she is handling all of the tinkering done to her.  She seems to tolerate it very well which means that she understands routines and has some sense of time.

Chloe is still on the CPAP, but I hope with her weight gain that she will be able to handle breathing on her own.

Day 53, Chloe reach the 3 lbs mark.  This is great milestone that she has made.  She is now eating 26 ml of formula which is near an ounce of food every three hours.

Day 54, This was a bad day for mom and dad.  The doctor told us that Chloe's lungs are not doing well and she must remain on the CPAP and have low dosages of Lasix.  This is bad news, because Chloe needs to be off of the CPAP before she can learn how to use a bottle for food purposes.

The absolute worse case scenario is that she comes home with lots of Oxygen and must have the equipment to go with it.  Also in extreme cases Lasix causes kidney stones and gall bladder stones.

The Lasix is used to clear the water that surrounds her lungs.

On a positive note, of all of the things that could go wrong with Chloe, this is the one that a parent would choose over other issues.  Chloe will grow out of this eventually and become a health woman.

Chloe is 3 lbs 1.7 oz and growing.

Chloe now cries when mom leaves.  Chloe's new game is to lay down peacefully and every once and a while open her eye to check if mom is around.  When she is not, a vocal response is given.  These are tearful times.

Day 55, Chloe has had a very good day, she is losing weight because of the Lasix but she is looking great.  There has been no Apnea episodes or any other bad things happening too her.

Chloe weighs 2 lbs 14.5 oz. The reason for the weight loss is because of the Lasix, which causes her to really use her bladder (i.e. get rid of excess water in her body).

Day 56, Chloe weighs 3 lbs 3 oz. and is very active.  Chloe can no longer use her dad's wedding ring as a bracelet, which shows progress.  Her legs are no longer looking like skinny little  knobby legs.  They looks like real baby legs.

Her lungs are still smaller than she needs.  Hopefully, time will help her to breath well.
