Chloe Elizabeth Lewis:  Week 7
(October 28 - November 3, 2001)

(Chloe sucking her pacifier)

Day 43, Today was a special day for dad, he got to hold Chloe with skin to skin contact.  That made his day and night by holding his little princess.

Chloe is doing fine today, with dirty diapers and fugitive emissions.  She has to process that 22 ml of food every three hours some way.

Day 44, Chloe is back on the CPAP round the clock until the doctors feel confident that she can handle it herself.  We are extremely confident that she can, but the doctors view the CPAP as a cure all for all lung problems .

She has lost a little weight (a few grams) but is 2 lbs. 6.5 ounces and loving life.  She has also grown to 14 1/2" long and trying to reach for the stars.

She is also maintaining her temperature very well, in fact I hope soon that they will put her in a bassinet, so that it will not be Chloe under glass.

She is doing exceptionally well for her size .

Day 45, This was an interesting day at best.  When I walked in to see Chloe, there was a sign on her condo stating "Reverse Isolation -- Please Wear Gloves :)."  What that means is that Chloe's Epogen (medicine for her to start producing red blood cells) is working all too well.  She is producing red blood cells at the expense of the white blood cells, thus her risk for infection  has just increased.

The doctor told us, that although this is not normal, it does happen to one out of ten preemies.  If we want to touch her we now have to do it in the confines of rubber gloves.

Chloe is producing her own blood; this  is obviously a important hurdle.  Even though the doctors tell us it is only a matter of time, as parents the worse case scenario is the one you are frighten of.  This is a good time to pray for little Chloe since she  is more susceptible  to germs and infection at this time.

We talked to the doctor about taking Chloe off the CPAP and he told us that the reason why she is on the CPAP is that when she is off the CPAP she has Apnea episodes, so to reduce them, the CPAP is the answer.

We visited her twice this day, once when she was sleeping and the other time when she was wide awake.  Unfortunately, we had to leave early because of a near by crises.

Chloe now weighs 1146 grams (2 lbs 8.4 ounces), which is great.  She has been gaining weight very slowly because she is a wiggle worm.  Exercising is very good, but Chloe loves to burn up those calories.  Cheryl and I both want her to make the three pound mark soon.  That will be good for Chloe's overall health.

Day 46, Chloe's white blood cell count is going back up and they allowed dad to hold her for an entire feeding.  I still had to wear gloves because of the "Reverse Isolation", but I got to hold her and tell her to "Elope."  As a dad it was great!

Chloe is still gaining weight, 1190 grams (2 lbs. 10 oz.) and producing dirty diapers.  But that is her job right now.

She is eating fine, chowing down on 25 ml of formula every three hours.  To put it in ounces, she is now eating almost an ounce each feeding.

(Chloe in Reverse Isolation -- Touching Mom's Finger)

Day 47, Chloe has been taken off reverse isolation and now she can be touch by people without the use of gloves.

Chloe has also return to cycling the CPAP and the nasal tube. She will have the CPAP on for two hours and nasal tube for one hour. This is the third time that Chloe has been cycling between the CPAP and nasal tube, hopefully it will be the last time cycling. Chloe needs to gain more weight for her to develop her lungs more fully. Fortunately Chloe is cycling without any apnea episodes. Go Chloe!

Chloe has only gained .4 oz. (2 lbs. 10.4 oz.), but she is growing.

Chloe's eyesight was tested and her eyesight was found to be normal.

(Chloe's Legg)

Day 48, This day, was an emotional one for Cheryl, Chloe was taken off cycling and put back on the CPAP. Cheryl was wondering when and if ever Chloe would come home.

The doctors put her back on CPAP because, Chloe started to have apnea episodes when they took her off the CPAP. It appears that her little lungs just could not support her nasal tube alone. This is a set back, for Chloe, but God is great.

Another good thing, was my friend Sossina got to take care of Chloe for the night. That was great, because we got to talk to about the good old days and catch up with the good new days.

Chloe weighed in at 2 pounds and 12.8 ounces.

Day 49, They put Chloe on Lasiks, because Chloe has excess water again. This means that Chloe will be loosing weight, but breathing better, because she has water around her lungs.

Chloe, is doing well, other than the breathing issues. We have to remind ourselves, that Chloe did not get any infections or any major disaster that happens to micro-preemies.
